Patients Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that people who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People purchasing such drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Doctors propose the mode of action of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

Individuals who have come off the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It was like something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle support.
